Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch with the Diverse Power team and occasionally asked whether they had any retired utility pole tags they could send back for evaluation. Approximately eleven years after their original order, they removed a tag from a decommissioned utility pole and mailed it to us. A few years later, they sent another sample that had been in service for approximately fourteen years. Most recently, after nearly twenty years had passed, we reached out again, and they sent us another tag that had been mounted on a utility pole for approximately 20 years before being removed during the pole’s decommissioning.

What makes these samples especially valuable is why they were removed. None of the tags had failed. They weren’t replaced because they became unreadable or because the barcode stopped working. Instead, each tag was removed only because the pole itself had reached the end of its service life.

Real-World Performance After 11, 14, and 20 Years

The progression tells a remarkable story. While each tag shows the expected signs of weathering around the mounting holes after years of outdoor exposure, the critical identification information remained intact. The laser-etched numbers were still clearly legible, and every barcode successfully scanned, including the tag that had spent approximately twenty years in the field.

The tags used by Diverse Power measure 1.25″ × 2.75″ and are manufactured from our UV Stable Black Aluminum with two 1/8″ mounting holes. Case Study

A great example of these tags in action is a customer in the sporting apparel industry needed a tag to track inventory from their warehouse to their retail stores all across the country. They needed something heavy duty to stand up to harsh conditions, but still flexible, and that could easily be attached or removed. This customer also wanted to go paperless, so they needed a barcode to scan.

The solution that NB&T came up with for this company was to use our Vinyl Snap Off Tags (Style 144V). These tags are made of vinyl, so they are sturdier than a paper label, but are thin and flexible enough that the customer can staple them to wood pallets. They are also laser etched with a linear bar code, so when scanned, it shows how much inventory should be on that wood pallet, along with which retail store location it is being shipped to. The pallet is scanned at the warehouse and then scanned again at the store to make sure no inventory was lost in transit.

Digital Mock-Ups

Here at National Band & Tag, we can assist with basic digital mock-ups of layouts for those who are unable to provide their own. We offer this on tags with complex layouts, to help ensure that everyone is on the same page of how the tag will look. Digital mock-ups are not exactly copies and may slightly vary in sizing, color, and look. We offer one to two major changes on your mock-up design, before an artwork fee may be added on for additional work.

DIGITAL MOCK-UPS OF LASER ETCHED TAGS:

The majority of our digital mock-ups are for laser etched tags as they can be very complex with multiple lines of text, logos, and barcodes. Laser etching can vary how it looks on different materials. Matching the exact color is one of the bigger challenges when creating a digital mock-up. Please see the examples below of how your actual tag may vary from your mock-up.

DIGITAL MOCK-UPS OF STAMPED TAGS:

Stamped tags are difficult to replicate exactly. Our stamped font is a custom font. The closest True-Type font is a Helvetica, so we use that when making stamped tag mock-ups. Since we usually only do mock-ups for tags with complex layouts, we don’t do many stamped ones. Stamped logos and radial text are an exception. As you can see on the examples below, radial text is difficult to do on a mock-up, and will always look better on the actual tag.

QR Coded Tags – Get Customers To Your Website With One Scan

WHAT IS A QR CODE:

A QR Code or Quick Response Code, is a 2D barcode that typically leads to a website. If it doesn’t lead to a website, then it can lead to a serial number. QR Codes can be scanned with a smart phone or a 2D scanner.

WHAT TAGS CAN HAVE A QR CODE ON THEM:

Almost all our plate tags can have a QR Code laser etched onto them. For QR Codes we recommend the UV Stable Black Aluminum material because the black and white contrast is the best for reading the QR Code with a smartphone. Stainless Steel or Blue Aluminum would be the next best options. Not available on Brass. We also offer Asset Labels where you can design your own QR Coded label.

QR CODE TAG USES:

Any time you want to lead someone to a website, a QR Code is an easy way to get them there. The information on the tag can’t change once it’s made. But you can constantly update the website that the QR Code leads to. If you want to lead someone to a website to learn more about what they are looking at. Or, if you want them to go to a website to sign in and log information about the equipment they are working with. A QR Code can easily get them to the correct place without them having to type in a website name.

Some uses include, but are not limited to: Tree Tags, Asset Tags, Menu Tags, Promotional Tags, Equipment/Tool Tags, etc.

HELPFUL TIPS:

We create the QR Code here for you, all we need is for you to send us the URLs or the number series. If you are getting 100 tags with 100 different URLs, then we will need all 100 links.
If you are not using your own website, make sure you are using a trusted website that will never be taken down. If the website is removed, your QR Codes are now unreadable.
If your URLs are long and you are getting a small tag, your QR Codes will be denser. This makes it harder to read with a smartphone. Consider using a 3rd party website like Bitly, or redirects, to shorten your URLS. Learn more about barcode density here.
QR Codes with logos in the middle – At this time, the only way for our software to accommodate this is for you to make the QR Code with the logo in the middle yourself, and send it to us as a logo file. There is a layout charge for each logo file you send us. So, we would recommend doing this type of QR Code only when it is the same URL link on all the tags.
