Celebrate “World Rabies Day” with National Band & Tag

World Rabies Day is approaching! September 28th is the day that brings awareness to rabies worldwide.  It is estimated that over 40,000 people in the US are exposed to rabies each year.  This exposure could come from your own dog or cat or after your dog or cat had an encounter with a raccoon, skunk, fox or a bat that has rabies.  People have associated rabies as an issue for dogs, but in 2009 there were 3 times more cat rabies cases reported than dogs, 81 to 300.  Rabies as a global issue affects 55,000 people and the cost associated with rabies is estimated to be more than $300 million in the US alone.

So, protect your family and pets and remember to get your dog and cat their rabies vaccination shot.  And don’t forget to change the tag on their collar.  The shape and color of the recommended tag changes every year.  There are 4 shapes and colors that are recommend by NASPHV and the shape for 2016 is the red heart.  The shape for 2015 was the green bell.  These shapes and colors are recommended for the 1 year vaccination.  By having the proper tag on, health officials will be able to determine if your animal is up to date with their vaccination.  This might just help keep your dog or cat alive.

For more information about rabies you can go to the CDC website:  http://www.cdc.gov/features/dsRabies/index.html

White Nose Syndrome – Bat Tags

fruit batDid you know, bats are crucial to our ecosystem, without them the insect population would grow out of control, and ecosystem balance would be completely thrown off? Many species of bats have been put on the endangered species list with the Indiana bats’ population dwindling down to just a few caves in the country. A contributor to the dwindling of the bat population is White Nose Syndrome. White Nose Syndrome (WNS) causes bats to grow a white fungus on the skin of the muzzle, ears, and wings. This fungus causes the bats to come out of hibernation in the winter and is detrimental to bat populations, as bats cannot survive in the winter with the cold temperatures and lack of food. The infected and healthy bats have to be tracked and carefully monitored to make sure the populations do not suffer further.

At National Band and Tag Company, we manufacture tags for bats, which help in the process of identifying non-infected bats. Our bat tags are lightweight tags that bends over the wing and don’t pierce the membrane. Click the image below to learn more.

National Chicken Wing Day – Chicken Wing Bands

The people of the United States love chicken! July 29 was deemed National Chicken Wing Day by the city of New York where Buffalo Wings were first invented. More chickens are raised for food than all other land animals combined, and Americans alone consume 8 billion chickens a year. Most of these chickens are farm-raised for different fast-food chains and grocery stores. These large corporations raise hundreds of thousands of chickens and need to identify them.

At National Band and Tag, we love chickens and love to make bands for chickens!

For this purpose, we make identification wing bands and leg bands for the chickens in order to track, breed, process, and produce chicken. Our most popular style of wing bands are metal. They can be closed without an applicator and can be laser etched with numbers and bar codes. We have many different styles of bands, colors, and options depending on your needs. Let National Band & Tag help you with all of your identification needs today!

Gone Fishin’ – Fish Tags

For many people who are avid fishermen or just like to fish recreationally, the summer is their favorite season; the fish are abundant and biting while the weather is nice and warm. As it gets hotter, the lake starts to sound pretty good or waking up in the cool mornings to go cast when the fish are biting.

How does National Band and Tag fit into this picture?

fish tagWe make fish bands and tags to help track the fish populations, especially when it comes to recreational fishing. The fish populations in different lakes/ bodies of water are crucial to that ecosystem. Banding the fish with fish tags helps to make sure the fish populations stay in the desired range to help maintain balance in the different ecosystems. Notify park rangers/ people in charge of the area you fish in when you catch a fish with a tag or band to help track fish populations!

Emerald Ash Borer

emerald ash borerThis emerald, metallic- looking beetle has become a nightmare for Ash Trees all over the United States. The beetle originated in Eastern Russia, Northern China, Japan, and Korea. By accident, it arrived in the United States stowed away on cargo imported from Asia. The Emerald Ash Borer causes ash trees to lose 30-50% of their canopy after 2 years of infestation, and death within 3-4 years.

So how can you save your ash tree from this pest? First, you have to save your tree by getting it treated. Ash trees get treated through injections into the trunk close to the ground. After your tree has been treated effectively, then National Band & Tag comes in.

EAB tree tag We sell tree tags that can be used as identification for the trees that have been treated. These tags come in a variety of shapes and sizes but are nailed into the tree, usually at eye level to ensure they can be seen and are stable. If you have an Ash tree that you think might be infected, please get it tested and treated to help stop the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer!

National Safety Month – Part 2

The National Safety Council uses June to observe National Safety Month, which focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. Last week we discussed how using colored aluminum tags can help label dangerous areas in the workplace. This week we want to focus on the OSHA-NSC alliance. One of OSHA’s newer requirements and one of National Band & Tag’s newest product lines is Wire Rope and Chain Sling Tags!

These tags help keep workers in the rigging and lifting industry safe. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires that all wire rope and chain slings be identified at all times with specific information such as the work load limit, angle limitations and vertical, choker, and basket limitations. Our tags help keep workers safe with proper identification which is important in this industry with large pieces of material and equipment being lifted.

How much do you love your pet?

Happy Pet Appreciation Week! Every year the first full week of June is Pet Appreciation Week (June 7-13, 2015) dedicated to your beloved pets! A pet is so much more than just an animal, they are a symbol of companionship, love and happiness. Some people even consider their pet to be a family member! So make sure to give your pet extra attention this week while also following some National Band & Tag tips for caring for your dog!

Tip #1.) Get your pet their license.

Did you know, it is the law to have your pet licensed? Many states require you to renew their license annually! Dog licenses on average cost $10-$20 dollars which is less than the fine you will pay if your dog is caught without a license. Other benefits include improving chances of animals being returned if lost and license fees support local animal shelters.

Tip #2.) Get your pet up to date on their rabies vaccination.

Depending on what state you live in, your pet may receive annual rabies vaccinations or receive them every three years. Rabies is a severe viral disease of the central nervous system that can be passed by salvia. The most common method of transfer is an infected wild animal such as a bat, fox, raccoon, or skunk biting your pet and infecting them. Rabies vaccinations are also required by law in all states.

Tip#3.) Get your pet a name tag.

This is simply a tag with your pet’s name on one side and your contact information on the back so if your pet is found they can be easily and quickly returned to you!

In all, your pet should have 3 tags on them at all times, pet license tag, rabies vaccination tag and name tag. This will help ensure that if they get lost they will be returned to you while also following all the laws!

Happy Pet Appreciation Week from National Band & Tag Company!

National Dairy Month

The month of June is dedicated to the hard working dairy farmers all over the country that produce one of America’s most valued items: Milk. Milk is produced in all 50 states of America and the farm value of milk production is second only to beef among livestock. Most everyone in the world consumes dairy in their daily diet. It’s safe to say that dairy is pretty important to the economic production of America.

National Dairy Month started as National Milk Month in 1937, but over the years has turned into National Dairy month to recognize the hard work of the dairy industry. But what would the dairy industry be without the dairy cows? When you have that many cows to keep track of, life can become hectic unless they are tagged and accounted for.

Here at National Band and Tag Company we make quality livestock ear tags including plastic ear tags and metal ear tags that come in many different styles, sizes and colors. These tags can be customized with your ranches name, barcodes, numbering and more. We also have RFID tags, AIN Tags and Lifechips for all your livestock identification needs!

America The Brave – Hero Bracelets

In recognition of Memorial Day this past Monday (5/25/15), we’d like to honor the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. Memorial Day was born out of the Civil War and was established in May of 1868 to honor the fallen soldiers that fought valiantly. As John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” We take pride in this country and our home, and Memorial Day reminds us each year that freedom comes at a price and we will always be thankful to our brave soldiers.

To honor these soldiers and to remember those who protect our country, National Band & Tag has formed a partnership with www.herobracelets.org to create customizable Hero Bracelets and G.I. Military Style Dog Tags. These are proudly manufactured here at National Band and Tag Company in the United States of America. At www.herobracelets.org you can customize a metal bracelet where $2.00 from each bracelet will go to the military branch, first responder, or family support organization of your choice. The first organization herobracelets.org donated to was The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and they now donate to 11 other organizations! The bracelets can be made from either copper, anodized aluminum, leather, or sterling silver and can come in a multitude of colors.

Sea Turtle Conservation

The Endangered Species Act states that all six species of sea turtles living in U.S. waters are either endangered or threatened and need to be protected. Sea turtle season is upon us as the weather starts to warm up and sea turtles start to nest. Peak nesting times are from June to July and one of the best times for researchers to tag female turtles is after they have laid their eggs on the beach. Researchers use these tags to track migration patterns, population, nesting habits and more. The data collected helps to monitor and improve the conservation of sea turtles.

How can National Band & Tag Company help with sea turtle conservation?

We offer self-piercing tags that are made of Monel or our special 681IC style is also available in Inconel (Inconel is a family of austenite nickel-chromium-based superalloys.) The Inconel material stands up to the harsh salt water environment and is the perfect size for a turtle’s flipper. Sea turtle tags are usually stamped with a unique number on one side and a return address on the other side (so people can contact the researchers to report a tagged turtle).

How can you help? If you find a tagged turtle make sure to contact the address on the tag with as much information as possible. The number on the tag, the date you found it, how you found it, and the condition of the turtle are a few key pieces of information. Another way to help is to keep beaches clean of trash and to not interfere with nesting turtles or hatchlings.

Bird Flu – What We Can Do To Help

The USDA has confirmed numerous cases of bird flu (avian influenza) since December 2014. It’s been reported in the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi flyways (migratory bird paths). The disease is not limited to any one type of flock, as it has been found in wild birds as well as backyard and commercial poultry flocks. Click here for a current map of the US areas affected.

To help curb the problem the USDA has plans in place, which include surveillance, reporting, biosecurity, movement control, vaccination and depopulation. All of these plans require diligent tracking and tagging of birds. That’s where we come in.

At National Band & Tag, we’ve been providing banding and tagging solutions for birds for over 100 years. We manufacture wing bands, adjustable leg bands and non- adjustable leg bands, as well as hundreds of other products. These styles, specifically, can be helpful tools in the quarantine, eradication, monitoring, and testing processes.

If you have questions, or would like more information about the solutions we offer, give us a call at 859-261-2035. We’d be happy to help.
