Happy 227th Birthday Kentucky!

Kentucky’s 227th birthday is coming up! Kentucky was granted statehood June 1, 1792, becoming the first U.S. state west of the Appalachian Mountains and the 15th state admitted into the union. National Band & Tag is proud to have been in Northern Kentucky for 117 of those 227 years.

To celebrate Kentucky’s birthday, check out these facts about Kentucky’s history:

1816 – Mammoth Cave (the world’s longest cave) was first promoted, making it the second oldest tourist attraction in the United States (behind Niagara Falls)

1875 – First Kentucky Derby run at Churchill Downs.

1892 – The radio was invented by a Kentuckian named Nathan B. Stubblefield of Murray.

1902 – National Band & Tag was founded.

  • Will you need your tags numbered? Tags can be sequentially numbered, so you can assign a specific number for every swimmer at your pool.
  • Will you need any attachments? Split ring attachments can turn your pool pass into a keychain that can hang on swim bags.

With over 160+ tag shapes and 11 different aluminum colors, the customization options are limitless. Click here to view all our tag shapes and get started creating your custom pool pass tags.

Can I see some Pet ID?

It’s National Pet ID Week (April 16 – 23)! As a manufacturer of dog and cat rabies tags and license tags, we are proud promoters of National Pet ID Week! This week is used to make sure every pet’s identification tags and microchips are up to date.

bone tag pet id week

Some pet owners say their dog doesn’t wear an ID tag because their dog is always on a leash. Or, that their cat is an indoor cat, so they don’t even put a collar on them. A pet can always get lost, and an ID tag needs to be in place in case your pet makes an escape. Leashes can break, doors get left open, and natural disasters can happen. It’s better to be prepared when it comes to getting your pet returned to you, and something as simple as an ID tag is an easy solution to get behind. In ASPCA research, owners who’d lost a pet were asked if they ever thought they’d lose a pet in the way they did, and the majority said no, they never imagined that would happen to them.

If your pet does wear their ID tags, take a moment to make sure that information is still legible and up to date.  Worn and damaged tags, or tags with incorrect contact information won’t help when someone is trying to contact you to return your pet.

Celebrate Pet ID Week with us by sharing your pictures below of your pet wearing their ID tags!

What’s your favorite tag?

At NB&T we have over 160+ dog and cat style tag shapes to choose from, as well as multiple other products. So, we asked some of our family members and employees,
“What is your favorite tag style and why?”

Brad (VP of Production): Style 1242 – “My favorite tags are our conservation products from small leg bands all the way to the large and not to forget lock-on and rivet bands.  I have always been an outdoors person and enjoy hunting and fishing with conservation being a passion.  My work in designing tooling and machines to make these bands is something I am very proud of.  Working with the biologist and banders throughout the years is very rewarding, especially in an area that I am very passionate about.”

Mark (Laser Department): Style 14ARBOR and 3602 – “If you’re talking metal tags, then the Arboretum Tags are my favorite.  I typically get to work more with graphics on these which I really enjoy doing. Especially when I can do different effects, fills to shade the colors, and different shades of gray.

I also enjoy working with the Asset Labels since I can do just about everything we do with the metal tags, but I can make these any shape the customer wants.  Squares are the most common, but we have done several other shapes such as stars, butterflies, crosses, etc.”

Erin (Customer Service Representative): Style 163/363 – “My favorite tags are the star shaped tags. I love helping customers bring their ideas to life with custom designs and the star looks great in every color of aluminum. The stars also have a variety of uses. They can be used as a promotional item for companies or make your pets look like a superstar.”

Environmental Management Tags

Did you know, National Band & Tag can assist environmental agencies, consulting firms, and other environmental services? Current environmental customers of ours are usually working to help protect the environment by helping companies and municipalities meet the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) requirements.

Some of the solutions our customers offer are permitting for projects with impact on wetlands, solutions for infrastructure of urban water planning, stormwater solutions to address issues of a single outfall or throughout an entire watershed, environmental assessments, testing of air, drinking water, wastewater, and more.

Tree Tags – Environmental customers use tree tags to label trees that are for stormwater, should not be cut down, or to ID ownership. An urban forest management plan gives public works agencies detailed information, recommendations, and resources needed to effectively and proactively manage public trees. Urban forest management may use tree tags like the picture below to ID public trees.

On the popular Travel Channel TV show, Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan, the episode, “Paradise in Palau” (Published April 24, 2016), featured Dominic diving into the ocean to help the Palau Conservation Society Sea Turtle Division capture and tag a sea turtle. Rigging Gear Inspection Problems

In Wire Rope Exchange’s November/December 2018 issue, the article, “The 6 Most Common Problems Found During A Rigging Gear Inspection” by Mike Close talks about multiple ways that rigging inspections can shut down or delay production time for companies. The problems range from broken hardware, damaged slings, to broken wires, but the #1 most common problem with rigging equipment is missing or illegible identification tags. OSHA requires tags to show manufacturer information, workload limits (WLL), and the lifting capacities for different sling hitches and angels. For other certain types of rigging, even more tag requirements may be needed.

Once a tag is illegible or removed, the sling is no longer able to be used and must be removed from service. National Band & Tag provides heavy-duty aluminum and stainless-steel tags for both wire ropes and chain slings. Our tags are stamped into the material, so they stand up longer in the grease, dirt, and abusive environment than non-metal tags.

Banded for Life

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and we are celebrating with some different species of birds that not only mate for life, but that researchers and conservationist have banded with NB&T bird bands for life.

Bald Eagles are monogamous birds that generally mate for life unless a pair is unable to produce eggs, and if one partner dies, the remaining partner will seek out a new mate. During courtship, these raptors have various flight displays including a fantastic cartwheeling fall where the pair locks talons in midair.

Barn Owls are solitary creatures until they find and pair off with a mate. They mate for life and become very emotionally attached to their partner. Barn Owls can often be seen cuddling with their partner and babies in their nest.

Geese are very loyal birds who will mate for life and are very protective of their partners and offspring. When a goose’s mate dies, that bird will mourn in seclusion. Some geese spend the rest of their lives as widows or widowers, refusing to mate again.

Laysan Albatrosses return to the colony three years after fledging but do not mate for the first time until seven or eight years old. During these four or five years, they form bonds with a mate that they will keep for life.

Ravens mate for life and live in pairs in a fixed territory. When their children reach adolescence, they leave home and join other adolescences. These flocks of young birds live and eat together until they mate and pair-off.

Sandhill Cranes mate for life and when they form a pair, the bond can last for years, until one of the cranes dies. After a mate passes away, the surviving crane will seek out a new mate.

Swans mate for life, although “divorce” sometimes occurs, particularly following nesting failure, and if a mate dies, the remaining swan will take up with another.

Increase Your Barcode Readability: NEW “Frosted” Background for Stainless Steel Barcoded Tags

Looking for higher readability in your stainless steel barcoded tags? Our new laser machine allows us to create a “frosted” white background around the barcode that removes the shine from stainless steel, allowing for a higher contrast. Higher contrasting barcodes read better, easier, and faster! All stainless steel and plain aluminum tags that have a barcode with automatically get the frosted background. Frosting is also available around text and logos, or to create a blank square upon request.

These frosted barcoded stainless-steel tags are useful for industries such as food processing, medical, laboratory, chemical, textile, and petroleum. In harsh environments such as these, stainless steel is necessary because of its non-corrosive aspects. Stainless steel tags with frosted barcodes will continue to scan and read for years.

Check out these samples below of how current customers have used frosted backgrounds on their tags:
