Dog Bark Park Inn – The World’s Largest Beagle

Husband and wife artists, and Dog Bark Park Inn owners, Dennis Sullivan and Francis Conklin have been ordering NB&T tags for over 30 years. They add brass tags, Style #298 Heart, as a “license tag” on every chainsaw dog carving they make. Each “license tag” is stamped with the year, business name, location and zip code. They have carved and sold over 30,000 wooden dog carvings from their Idaho art studio and gift shop.

To go along with their dog shaped chainsaw artwork gift shop, Dennis and Francis added a 30 feet tall beagle shaped bed and breakfast inn. Dog lovers visiting Cottonwood, Idaho can stop and get their picture with the World’s Largest Beagle! If you are lucky enough to snag a reservation to stay at the inn, you will find more dog chainsaw creations on the inside of the beagle.

Francis Conklin states, “National Band & Tag has always been a pleasure to do business with, being friendly on the phone, and supplying our needs in the exact fashion as expected. We have recommended your services to others.”

Treasure Trees – Tagging Mecklenburg County’s largest, most historic trees

Are you thinking about creating a legacy tree program for your city or county? Then check out what Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, NC did with their Treasure Tree Program!

The original tree program started in the 1989 and went until 2000 with 123 treasure trees listed. It eventually stopped with no one to run it. Fortunately, the program was picked back up and is now bringing in even more treasure trees! The new Treasure Trees Program seeks to locate the original treasure trees and tell their stories, as well as recognize a new generation of special trees and share their ecological importance to the region’s environment. Local tree enthusiasts, private arborists, city of Charlotte staff and TreesCharlotte representatives make up the program’s committee.

The original tree program used hand-stamped aluminum tags with a tree identification number. Many of the old tags were faded, and some had even been swallowed by the trees as the tree grew around the tag. The new Treasure Tree Program wanted to replace the old tags and modernize the tags to include more information about the tree to educate the public. That is when they contacted National Band & Tag for their new tags! Our UV Stable Arboretum Tree Tags can be customized in any way you want. The Treasure Tree Program choose to have the tree common name, scientific name, and a QR code that would lead visitors straight to a web page dedicated to each tree. Also, to avoid losing tags to tree growth again, they used NB&T’s aluminum nails with stainless steel springs to mount the tags off the tree surface about an inch to allow for future growth.

Brett Dupree, Tree Hunter for the program stated, “We have seen parents and kids utilize the QR codes on our program trees to visit the web pages and learn more about the trees and the program itself, so this tagging solution has been a big win for us.” The new and improved Treasure Tree Program is currently up to 147 trees.

Beehive Management Tags

National Band & Tag manufactures asset identification tags for many purposes, but one of the more unique uses is for beehives! Our customer Robert Couchman with BEE KIND Honeybee Rescue goes in and safely removes honeybees from places they shouldn’t be in and re-locates them to his apiaries. He uses our tags on his beehives as part of his apiary management system. Numbered tags allow Robert to track which hives have been tested and treated for parasites, the queen of the hive, and many other important factors for keeping healthy honeybees.

Scout honeybees will go off in search of a new home, and sometimes the home they decide on, is not the most honeybee friendly place. You don’t want to suddenly stumble across a hive of fifteen to twenty thousand honeybees in your house, shed, roof, garage, etc. BEE KIND Honeybee Rescue in Wisconsin helps rescue and relocate honeybees as much as possible. Timing is key, with the best chance for successful relocation being in late March to early September. Early relocation allows the colony to establish a new hive, expand colony population, and store enough honey and pollen to survive a Wisconsin winter.

The Easter Bunny has an Earring?

rabbit ear tag

rabbit ear tagDid you know that we manufacture rabbit ear tags? These ear tags are used on rabbits for different research, breeding, and conservation purposes. NB&T offers a few different types of ear tags for rabbits, two of our most popular styles are a thin metal tag with an aluminum or plastic washer (style #1841), or a self-piercing ear tag (style 893). Other styles include the style 1005-1 for small rabbits, or the 1005-3 and 1005-4 for larger rabbits. Your tag style and material may vary depending on the species and environments the rabbits are in.

rabbit ear tag

An alternative method for tagging rabbits in the ear, or any large-eared animal. is accomplished by first folding the ear in half. Next, locate the piercing point of the tag, half of the tag’s length, down on the folded ear, allowing the other half of the tag length to remain clear. Now pierce through both halves of the ear with a single squeeze of the applicator. This will result in two incisions in the ear. Simply pull the ear back up and the tag will now be located securely in the center of the ear with the number facing out at all times.

National Band & Tag will be closed on Friday, March 30th, for Good Friday. Business will resume on Monday April 2nd.

Durable Stainless Steel Identification

stainless steel tags on liquid nitrogen tanksTags that stand up to harsh environments are needed in many industrial applications and whether it be extreme hot or cold, our 304 stainless steel tags can stand up to the task! Below is a picture provided by a customer of our stainless steel tags in their liquid nitrogen tank. They have been very happy with their tags because even when covered in frost, the large, bold, laser etched letters and numbers are still highly visible. This high visibility allows our customers to conduct their research and identify each box in the tank without having to reach in and pull it out.

These tags are one of our most popular tags, style 14, rectangular with rounded corners, 1” x 3” inches. We offer two different thicknesses in this material, .030 and .047. These particular tags also have a 3/16” x 5/16” slot so that they can easily swing around the handle.

What type of environment do you need tags for? We’d be happy to send samples and work with you to find the perfect form of identification for you!

How do you plan to attach your tags?

“How do you plan to attach your tags?” That’s our favorite question that seems to stump customers.

There are multiple ways that you can attach a tag depending on your application. We offer a variety of fasteners to meet your identification needs. If you plan on hanging your tag we offer multiple lengths and materials from ball chains, to custom length steel wires, to plastic cable ties. If you plan on mounting your tag, adhesive backing is available, but limited to aluminum tags and certain sizes only.

Other fasteners that we do not currently carry but can be used to attach tags are pop rivets, welding, nails, screws, and more. If you are planning on using your own fasteners, make sure to get the correct hole size when ordering your tags.

Nameplate Tags In Use

IMG_3062One of our customers, Yellow Springs High School, has a very interesting use for custom laser etched nameplate tags. They sent us the story as well as a photo to show us how they use our product!

Case Study:

“Mr. John Day and Mr. Shawn Jackson, history instructors at Yellow Springs High School, and students taking U.S. History participated in a class project to create a Yellow Springs Historical Trail commemorating people and events from the town’s past. Students researched local history under the theme of “War & Peace” and studied the impacts Yellow Springs had on American History. Topics ranged from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Commencement Speech at Antioch College in 1968 to Marion Ross, an Antioch College student turned Union soldier who won the Congressional Medal of Honor (posthumously) for his participation in a raid to steal a Confederate train.”

Along the trail, students, as well as the general public, can use their smartphones to learn. They simply come to a trail marker, scan the QR code, and instantly have information at their fingertips. It is a current, relevant, interactive way of learning.

This is just one brilliant example of what our customers use our nameplate tags for. There are others that you can read here.

We love hearing how our tags are in use! How do you use yours?

Tagging Techniques – Using Welding Techniques for Fastening Tags

tack welded tag

Tack Welded Tag

We pride ourselves in being a solutions provider at National Band & Tag, and like to share case studies of our tags in use.

Case Study:

An automotive manufacturer uses our stainless tags by spot welding them to their inventory control racks.   The dark etched 2D Data Matrix bar code survives a great deal of abuse when traveling through their work in process.  This technique enables automatic tracking of every batch of parts in this manufacturing facility.

Our tags can be made in heavy duty stainless steel (.031″ 430 Stainless Steel, .030″ 304 Stainless Steel, .047″ 304 Stainless Steel) which are ideal for welding.

What’s that Lassie? Timmy fell into the well? — Well Tags

lassieDid Timmy really fall into the well? No. But in the classic TV show, Lassie, the dog was always saving Timmy from one thing or another. This catch-phrase was coined by fans, but does speak to the common-known danger of falling into a well. Now, while this isn’t exactly as common now-a-days as it may have been in 1960, it still brings us to the topic of wells.

Did you know, that every well (hole in the ground meant to source, test, inject water), must have a Well Tag? To ensure clean and adequate supply of underground drinking water, programs are implemented to prevent contamination of aquifers from improper well construction, well drilling, or well abandonment. This is why any well drilling must be done by a licensed well driller who must first obtain a permit. Once they have a permit, the permit number will be on the Well Tag, so if any information is needed on the well, there is an identification number for it.

This is where National Band & Tag comes into play. Our metal Well Tags are heavy duty and withstand being outside year-round. The stamping doesn’t fade so the identification number is always readable,

well permit tagsThe section of the well pipe that protrudes out of the ground is where the Well Tag is attached. Use 1/8” x 9/16” slots if you plan on using 1/2” strapping and 1/4” x 7/8” slots if plan on using 3/4” strapping. Most people like to use landscaping and bushes to hide the well head in their yard. If you move into a new home and the Well Tag is missing, call your local water or health department to find your well ID number. Requirements may vary state to state on what your identification tag or label may need to look like, or what information should be included. Check with your state’s Water Management Division or Department of Water Resources to find out your state’s laws.

And if you still need help with your well, chances are Lassie may come to the rescue.

Heavy Duty Metal Wire Markers

metal wire markersNowadays, we have cables and wires everywhere. They keep us connected and they help run our world. We have them in our homes, in our workplaces, and in public places. Whether you are an electrical engineer or a residential handyman, wires can be tough to work with unless they are properly identified. Some wires can be totally harmless, while others could cause major problems. Have you ever been in the position where you had to cut a wire, but didn’t know which one was the correct one?

Let National Band & Tag Co. help with heavy duty Metal Wire Markers!

These wire markers wrap around the end of a wire with a stamped identification number that you can reference. Great for cable wiring, telephone wiring, electrical wiring, wiring outlets and switches, stripping wire, splicing wire, etc. These markers are made of either brass, aluminum, stainless steel, or tinned steel based on your need. They will withstand time and conditions, and won’t rip or tear when crowded in with a large group of wires. The stamping won’t fade or wear, ensuring you will be able to identify your wires for years to come.

Gone Fishin’ – Fish Tags

For many people who are avid fishermen or just like to fish recreationally, the summer is their favorite season; the fish are abundant and biting while the weather is nice and warm. As it gets hotter, the lake starts to sound pretty good or waking up in the cool mornings to go cast when the fish are biting.

How does National Band and Tag fit into this picture?

fish tagWe make fish bands and tags to help track the fish populations, especially when it comes to recreational fishing. The fish populations in different lakes/ bodies of water are crucial to that ecosystem. Banding the fish with fish tags helps to make sure the fish populations stay in the desired range to help maintain balance in the different ecosystems. Notify park rangers/ people in charge of the area you fish in when you catch a fish with a tag or band to help track fish populations!
