Radial Text

A unique option that National Band & Tag offers is radial text or text that goes along the curve of our round tags. Radial text is helpful for fitting lots of text on a small tag, and for fitting text along the tag when there is a hole in the middle of the tag. Curved text is popular for survey tags, tree tags, power pole tags, dog tags, promotional keychains, and more. Contact us today for a free quote on your radial text tags!

Federal Bird Bands VS NB&T Bird Bands

National Band & Tag manufacturers bird bands ranging in size from a hummingbird all the way up to a swan. We manufacture bands for the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory that are used by researchers across the United States to track multiple species of birds. The bands we produce for the USGS are Federal Bands, but we also produce Non-Federal Bands (NB&T Bands) for those who want to band their own birds or use the bands for a promotional (non-bird) use. The chart below shows the differences between the two types of bands. You can also view our Size Comparison Chart of Federal VS NB&T bands to find the band with the correct measurement for your needs.

Custom Warehouse Identification Tags

National Band & Tag is your go-to company for all your custom warehouse identification needs. Large warehouses are always in need of proper asset management and inventory management. We can produce custom-designed tags in multiple types of materials to meet your specific ID needs. Check out our materials, and examples from customers below.

METAL TAGS

Our heavy-duty metal tags come in a variety of materials to meet your warehouse’s environment. Stainless Steel tags are available for environments with extreme heat or cold, or that deal with harsh chemicals. Colored Aluminum is available for when color coding is necessary, or UV Stable Black Aluminum is available for a high contrasting, easy to read tag. Hole sizes and locations are customizable, so you can have 2 – 4 holes for attaching to a shelving unit, or 1 hole at the top to hang the tag. All of our tags can be customized with logos, numbers, text, barcodes, etc. For barcodes, we offer a 2D Data matrix, Linear Code 39 or Code 128, or a QR Code.

The tag below is an example from a customer who needed an extra-large barcode so they could scan the barcode on the floor while sitting on the fork-lift. This makes picking inventory off the shelf easier and faster for them by not having to get on and off the forklift to scan it out. (Style #14, 3″ x 5″, 2D Data Matrix Barcode, UV Stable Aluminum).

PLASTIC TAGS

Plastic tags are an option if you need a temporary ID solution, or something colorful and flexible. We offer .020″ vinyl plastic that is thin and can be nailed or stapled. We also offer a thicker, but still flexible polyurethane material in select styles. Color options vary by style number.

The tags below are an example from a customer that used these flexible barcoded tags to staple to a wooden pallet. (Style #144VLE, 1″ x 3″, yellow vinyl snap-off tag).

BLANK TAGS / WRITE-ON TAGS FOR ON-SITE IDENTIFICATION

Any of our metal or plastic tags can be produced blank so that you can engrave them yourself. We also offer Write-On Tags, which can be engraved with a ball-point pen or sharp object. These methods are better for warehouse management that requires quick, on-site, identification. For your blank tags, we offer a Battery Powered Precision Engraver with Diamond Tip Bit (Style R1580) and Hardened Steel Hand Stamps, gothic style, letters, and numbers for hand stamping tags (Styles 1571 & 1572).

Socially Distant Fundraiser Ideas for Conservation Organizations

Due to COVID-19, we are all staying socially distant. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to cancel your annual banquet and fundraiser. Usually, Bird Band Raffles are held in person. But here are some other ideas to keep the fundraisers going while staying safe:

  • Facebook Live Raffle – Have your chapter president go Live at a designated time. They can show off the auction items, take donations, and name the winner, all in 1 video.
  • Online Auction – If you have a website, set up a page where members can view raffle items, buy the number of bands or shotgun shell tags they want, and then mail it to them. Use social media, or email blasts to announce the winner of the drawing.
  • Waterfowl SlamsSee Utah’s set up here. Bands are mailed out after the hunting season is over based on how much someone participated.

NWTF worked with NB&T to make an easy-to-use PDF order form to order shotgun shell tags or bird bands, and raffle tickets. If your organization is interested in creating something like this for your chapters, email us at [email protected]. If you are a smaller organization, who is interested in having a custom logo stamp made, learn more here. Paper Tickets numbered 1-100 are available (Style R2754) to help your drawing go smoothly.

2021’s Rabies Tag is the Blue Rosette

We are currently in the middle of our busiest time of the year with rabies tags. To guarantee delivery by January 1st, we urge all our veterinarian customers to order before November.

The National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV) recommended tag style of the year for 2021 is #147, Blue Rosette.

2021 rabies tags blue rosette

Why purchase from National Band & Tag?
  • Quick turnaround times
  • Low-cost leader
  • Manufactured in America
  • Multiple shapes and sizes available to fit both cats and dogs
  • Your information, custom stamped to meet your rabies vaccination needs
  • Annual order reminders are sent out each year after your first purchase
  • Both 1-year and 3-year rabies tags are available
Tips for ordering your 2021 rabies tags:
  1. Order enough tags. If you are on the fence about how many tags to order, we always recommend over-ordering. To re-order more tags, it will cost more time and money than if you order 100 more tags than normal the first time. If there are extra tags at the end of the year, you can recycle aluminum tags.
  2. Special orders take more time. If you are ordering something other than stamped tags with standard packing, additional time will be added on to produce your order. This can really affect customers who want to order paint-filled tags that are flat packed in November and December.
  3. Don’t forget to pay for your order. All orders must be paid for before the tags will be produced. (Unless you have an open account). Just call in with your quote number and credit card to pay, mail a check, or pay online.
  4. Review your acknowledgment. After your sales representative has entered your order, they will send you an acknowledgment (receipt), please review it to make sure the stamping, quantity, style, color, etc. is correct. Your estimated shipping date will also be on your acknowledgment.

End Rabies: Collaborate, Vaccinate

World Rabies Day is September 28th! This holiday was created by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) with the goal to end the spread of rabies to humans from dogs. World Rabies Day focuses on increasing community awareness of rabies and its prevention.

2020’s theme is “End Rabies: Collaborate, Vaccinate

End rabies: a reminder that we have 10 years to end human deaths from dog rabies and that we can raise awareness at the global level through the End Rabies Now campaign.

Collaborate: The United Against Rabies coalition was formed and subsequently launched the Global Strategic Plan. We need to continue collaboration at the international, national and local levels to eliminate rabies. Especially keeping in mind that it’s a disease that knows no borders.

Vaccinate: A massive breakthrough was recently made in the rabies world. GAVI, the vaccine alliance, has included rabies into its portfolio of vaccines. This means that with their support, 181,000 more human deaths from rabies can be prevented. We also need to remember to vaccinate dogs to prevent rabies at its source so that we can reach elimination.

Inspection Tags and Equipment Tags

Inspection tags and equipment tags are essential to keeping work environments safe, efficient, and accident-free. Tags are a way to visually communicate workplace hazards and which equipment has been inspected. Keeping your equipment running correctly, while also meeting compliance regulations, will ensure operations in your facility are going smoothly. When workers use inspection tags to record inspections, and equipment tags to record maintenance, it allows employees to see when the next service should take place.

annual inspection tags and monthly inspection tagstags that show inspection date with metal and a label

Tags that show equipment, machinery, tools, and other assets have been inspected is important for workplace safety and to meet compliance regulations. Inspection tags also save you time and money by making sure everything is running correctly. It usually costs a lot less to have equipment repaired than replaced. Safety managers need to make sure all parts of the facility are up to the standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). By doing this, they are not only staying OSHA compliant but showing their employees that they can provide a safe workspace. Safety inspections can include everything from inspecting fall protection equipment, elevators, heavy-equipment, safety gear, hardware, etc.

custom elevator inspection tags

There are many types of cheap inspection labels on the market, but National Band & Tag provides low-cost heavy-duty inspection tags. Our metal tags are more efficient than plastic labels for inspection identification because they won’t rip or fade.  Durable materials such as aluminum and stainless steel are perfect for harsh environments and will last for years. We make our custom tags to order so that they meet your company’s specific identification needs. Text is customizable, which allows you to design your own tags for inspection, service records, maintenance records, tested tags, etc. Choose what dates you want on your tags to meet weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual inspections.

Wing Bands and Leg Bands for Peafowl

Whether you’re a peafowl farmer, or just raising some peacocks for pets, NB&T is here to help with all your peafowl identification needs. Numbered bands are helpful for tracking breeding birds, chicks from different bloodlines, and other important information.

Leg Bands for Peafowl

Both aluminum and plastic leg bands are a great option for those who want a temporary form of identification because they are removable. Some customers prefer leg bands over wing bands because they don’t want to pierce the wing with a wing band. If you plan on leg banding peachicks, you will need to order multiple sizes and change out the bands as the peafowl grow. Below are two videos on how to band peafowl with National Band & Tag’s plastic and aluminum leg bands.

(Please note that National Band & Tag is not responsible for the incorrect leg band size being ordered. Measuring your bird’s leg is the best way to find the correct size leg band. Learn more on how to measure a bird’s leg here.)

Wing Bands for Peafowl

If you want wing bands for your peafowl instead of leg bands, the Jiffy wing bands in brass (style 893B) are a very popular option. The aluminum Jiffys (style 893) work for peafowl as well. Wing bands are a great option because you can band the peachick, and the wing band will grow with them to adulthood.

NEW Sea Turtle Tags Made from Incoloy

We are excited to announce our new, bigger, better, sea turtle tags! These new turtle tags, style 691IL are made from Incoloy material and are 3/8″ x 7/16″.

Our customers asked for a tag that would fit on the flippers of larger species of sea turtles. As well as a tag that younger sea turtles could grow into. The new 691IL meets this customer request, and more! The larger tag not only fits on larger species of sea turtles, but it also provides room for additional stamping. You can now fit more lines of text on one side of the tag, and a larger, easier to read, serial number on the other side of the tag. Shown below is a size comparison of the new 691IL tag to our other, smaller, turtle tag (style 681IC). sea turtle tags for large turtles made from Incoloy material. Another difference between our turtle tags besides size is the material. The new 691IL is made of Incoloy, while the 681IC is made of Inconel. These two materials are similar in that they both high-performance alloys that stand up to salt-water environments. Incoloy has less nickel, and more iron, in it than Inconel.

Both of our turtle tags are self-piercing, but the 691IL has a hole, while the 681IC has a bubble. Both these features ensure that when the tag is closed, it won’t get caught on anything, such as a fishing net. The hole makes sure that when the tag is closed, no stamping gets covered up. The hole also makes it impossible for the person placing the tag on the turtle to over-apply the tag.

For tips on how to apply turtle tags, check out this blog.

Kennel License Tags for Commercial Breeders

If you are a county in one of the states who issue kennel license tags for commercial dog breeders, National Band & Tag is here to help!

Each state has its own definition of what a kennel, commercial breeder, and a pet store is. Generally, a “Kennel” means an enclosed, controlled area, inaccessible to other animals, in which a person keeps, harbors or maintains five or more dogs under controlled conditions. A general definition for a “commercial dog breeder” is someone who breeds a large number of dogs, within a certain time frame. Each state’s definitions, standards of care, licensing, registration and permits, and inspections can be viewed on this PDF, provided by the Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

For counties who need to issue kennel licensing tags, there are two main options to choose from:

Option 1: A tag to go on the kennel with corresponding tags for the dogs.

Option 2: No tag on the kennel, just tags for the dogs.

kennel licensing on dog tags example

However your county decides to do their kennel licensing tags, National Band & Tag has lots of customization options to fit your needs. You can shop by shape (square, round, oblong, rectangle, etc.). The most popular style for the tag that goes on the kennel is style #187. We have 11 different colors to choose from, so you can have a different color every year. Your custom stamping can have your county’s name, maximum dog limits, sequential numbering, year, and more. Contact us today for a free quote on kennel license tags!

(Please note – If you are a commercial dog breeder in need of a license or tags, please contact your county. We sell to the county, not the end-user).

Copper Write-On tags are available in an oblong shape (style 2720) or in the shape of a watering can (style 2721)! Aluminum Write-On tags are available in 3 different rectangular sizes (styles 2702w1 – 2702w3), an oblong shape (style 2729), or a rectangle with a wrap-around tail (style 2725). Tags featured in the picture below (except the wrap around tag), have the option of copper wires attached. Oblong shaped tags have the option of an eyelet in the hole for extra reinforcement. The 2702 series comes with a biodegradable cardboard backing. This makes writing on the tag while in the garden easier because the cardboard gives you a sturdy backing to write against.

How to Find the Correct Leg Band Size for your Bird

Did you know, National Band & Tag manufacturers bands ranging in size from hummingbirds to swans? With so many band sizes to choose from, it may be confusing what size you need.

There are two different options for finding out which size leg band you should order:

Option 1: Find the diameter of your bird’s leg. The easiest way to do this is to use a piece of string. You might want to have one person hold the bird, while another holds the string and measures.

  • Step 1: Place the tip of a string onto the bird’s leg and hold it in place. Wrap the string around the leg until the string reaches the tip on the end of the string you are holding in place.
  • Step 2: Mark the point where the string touches the tip with a marker.
  • Step 3: Stretch the string out across the length of the ruler and then locate the mark on the string. Read the measurement on the ruler. This tells you the circumference of the bird’s leg. For this example, let us say the measurement is 34.54 mm.
  • Step 4: Divide your circumference measurement by 3.14. Given the example of a 34.54 circumference, the diameter of the leg is 11 mm. You can then take this diameter to our bird band page, and see that our Size 14 is 11.13 mm, and would be the best size for your bird.

Option 2: Check for your species of bird on the USGS’s Recommended Band Size chart. This is a guideline, and NB&T is not responsible for incorrect size bands being ordered. While the USGS’s list is reliable for most standard birds, your bird could be slightly different. For example, wild mallards usually wear a size 14 band, but farm-raised mallards tend to be a little fatter and may need to go up to a size 16 band.

Next Steps:

Now that you know the diameter of your bird’s leg, you can check out all our bird bands and find the band size that matches your bird’s leg. Don’t forget that each size band needs it’s matching applicator to properly seal it. If you are ordering multiple sizes of bands, you will also need multiple applicators.

Prevent Flock Cannibalism with “Clip-On” Blinders / Peepers

Stop feather pecking with National Band & Tag’s “Clip-On” Blinders / Peepers!

All birds mildly peck to establish a pecking order amongst the flock. When this behavior escalates to feather pecking is when your flock is in trouble. Feather pecking includes ripping feathers out, damaging the skin, or even making another bird bleed. Feather pecking leads to cannibalistic behaviors.  You should try to prevent these behaviors, or immediately squash them in order to keep the whole flock from becoming cannibalistic. Birds have a tendency to copy each other, so if one starts pecking, others may follow.

Some conditions that can cause poultry (chickens, pheasants, quail, etc.) to start feather pecking include overcrowding, lack of food/water, stress, inadequate nest boxes, and more. You can get more details about these causes in the article, “FEATHER PECKING AND CANNIBALISM IN SMALL AND BACKYARD POULTRY FLOCKS” (By Dr. Jacquie Jacob, University of Kentucky). For gamebirds, space recommendations need to be double compared to chickens, and even larger for pheasants, according to, “Poultry Cannibalism: Prevention and Treatment“, (By Phillip Clauer, Pennsylvania State University).

You can take preventative measures by using NB&T’s “Clip-On” Blinders / Peepers on your whole flock before they start pecking, instead of just on the hens who are pecking. Our pinless peeper was designed with you, the customer, in mind. We spent over a decade developing, talking with customers, modifying, and improving the design of our pinless peeper (Style 3184L). While pinless peepers will have a percentage of loss, ours will stay in longer. You know it’s a National Band & Tag peeper because ours have “NB&T” molded into the back of the crossbar!

World Migratory Bird Day 2020: Birds Connect Our World

What is World Migratory Bird Day?

In 2018, the Environment for the Americas (EFTA), joined the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), to create a single, global, bird conservation education campaign, World Migratory Bird Day! This day is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

We celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on the second Saturday of May in the US and Canada (May 9, 2020), and the second Saturday of October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean (October 10, 2020). There are two celebration days a year because migratory birds are all migrating at different times in different parts of the world. The 2020 World Migratory Bird Day conservation theme, Birds Connect Our World, focuses on the tracking technologies used to explore the routes of migratory birds across the globe, and how this knowledge is used to inform conservation.

How NB&T Supports World Migratory Bird Day:

National Band & Tag is a supporter of migratory birds, and World Migratory Bird Day because we manufacture millions of bird bands each year. Researchers and conservationists use our bird bands to track birds and collect data. Our bands fit in with this year’s theme of Birds Connect Our World because our bands are used for tracking! Bands have been used since 1595 to track and identify birds. Other bird tracking systems include satellite tags, light-level geolocators, weather radars, satellite imagery, and data from people using birding apps. Tracking migratory birds provides us with lots of useful information! We learn about the places where birds nest, stop to rest, and where they spend the non-nesting months. We can examine their habitats, threats they face on the ground, and how we can help improve their migratory journey.

How to Participate in World Migratory Bird Day while in Quarantine:

It’s a crazy time we live in right now. We aren’t able to get out and take a bird tour or attend a local WMBD activity. But there are still lots of ways you can celebrate World Migratory Bird Day from home! Check out www.migratorybirdday.org/resources for WMBD coloring pages, at-home scavenger hunts, and activity pages. You can also go birding in your backyard. Observe what birds you can see from your home, and then try learning more about your local birds online. Show off how you are celebrating WMBD on social media using #WMBD2020, #WorldMigratoryBirdDay, and #BirdsConnectOurWorld.
